How do you cite Georgia House Bill 1068 in APA format? It is also known as the Postpartum Depression Act.

I need to be able to cite the postpartum depression act in APA format. I read the APA manual but it kept referring to the bluebook. I need in text citation as well as how you would put it in the reference list. thanks.

Answer

You need to gather this information.

  • Name of the law – Postpartum Depression Act
  • Year it was passed - ?
  • Where is was published – Official Code of Georgia Annotated.
  • Chapter and Sections of the statues where it can be found - ?
  • And then ask if there are amendments to it since it has been passed.

You can search the Georgia Code here - http://www.lexisnexis.com/hottopics/gacode/

I am not sure what you are trying to cite, so you need to locate the act in the code.

Based on what other laws look like, I think it could resemble something like this -

Postpartum Depression Act. O.C.G.A. § 31-1-12 (2016).

This, from pp.  219-220 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition.

A7.04  Statutes (Bluebook Rule 12)

In text, give the popular or official name of the act (if any) and the year of the act. In the reference list entry, include the source and section number of the statute, and in parentheses, give the publication date of the statutory compilation, which may be different from the year in the name of the act.

Your in-text citation could then be something like this -

Legislators in Georgia recently acknowledged the severity of this issue by passing the Postpartum Depression Act (2017).

If the reason you are citing this has any legal implications you should consult a lawyer or a law librarian for proper citing (a librarian with a legal degree). I am neither.

Your professor would be another good resource for help in citing this.
