How do I cite the phrase by Erasmus, D (1466–1536) - "Prevention is better than cure?"

 http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/d/desiderius148997.html ??
I have googled this phrase and located the author and dates, from the brainy quote website. How do I reference this information in text and in the reference section?

Answer

The reference is straightforward -

Brainy Quote. (2016). Desiderius Erasmus quotes. Retrieved from

Normally a direct quote needs a page number. When the Gods of the Internet “freed” information from books, the page number disappeared which creates a problem when we are using a citation style that still nods to published information as authority. One solution for online sources is to list the paragraph number you pulled the quote from. However, the Brainy Quote site doesn’t really even offer that.

I consulted with some of my fellow librarians here and we think your source should be seen as one paragraph in length. Your in-text citation would look something like (depending on your wording) this –

Health care professionals should still heed the advice of the 16th century philosopher Desiderius Erasmus, “prevention is better than cure” (Brainy Quote, 2016, para. 1).
