How to reference and cite an image from the Internet in a Powerpoint presentation?

Answer

This from p. 25 of the APA Style Guide to Electronic Resources ...

Work of art (painting, drawing, sculpture, photograph, or other medium)

Artist, A. A. (copyright year). Title of work [Medium: Painting, drawing, sculpture, photograph, etc.]. Retrieved from http://xxxxx

  • Note that images from clip art packages from common software programs like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint do not need reference list entries or citations. Describe in text where the images came from because these programs are so wellknown that citations are not necessary.

The link you included in your question is for the results of an Google image search for "chamomile herb" so I am not sure the exact image you wish to cite. I took the first image to use as an example, which would be something like ...

Eden Brothers. (2016). Chamomile seeds. [Photograph]. Retrieved from http://www.edenbrothers.com

/store/chamomile_seeds.html

However, in APA a photograph in a document is given a caption that contains the needed information, and there is no citation in the reference list. This is a rough form of a caption.

No. of figure. Description. Adapted from "[name of article]," by [author], [year], [title of journal, volume, p.]. Copyright statement.

Let say this is the third image in your PowerPoint. Maybe something like this -

Figure III. Photograph of chamomile flowers and seeds. "Chamomile seeds," by Eden Brothers, 2016. Retrieved from http://www.edenbrothers.com/store/chamomile_seeds.html

I left out the "adapted" since I assume you would not be altering the image in any way.

APA used 10 or so pages of the Publication Manual of the American Pscyhological Association, 6th edition, to discuss how to create a caption, so it is not an easy thing to sum up.

I think the above would meet the spirit of the law. If this was a paper for publication, and not for school, then we would need to address copyright permission, but because this is for an education project this should be fine.

Often with this type of question there is no "smoking gun" example to follow.

And as always, if you professor does not like it, then we defer to her or his wisdom to show us the correct path.

Good luck.
