How to cite in-text, an online dictionary with no author and year?

Answer

This in the example for a reference for an online reference work (i.e. dictionary) with no by-line (i.e. no author) from p. 16 of the APA style guide to electronic references, 6th edition.

Entry in an online reference work with no byline

Title of entry. (year). In Title of reference work (xx ed., Vol. xx). http://dx.doi .org/xxxxx

If you cannot locate a date for the item you are citing, you use this (n.d.).

In order to create an in-text reference, you first need to create your works cited reference. A hypothetical entry would look like this -

Cat. (n.d.). In Online dictionary. http://book.com

In your in-text citation, this would be a title entry - in lieu of an author the title of the reference is used. Something like this ...

In northern Italy, the cat is called "the rabbit who runs on the roof" as opposed to the traditional definition of feline (Cat, n.d.).
