I'm a PA student working on my thesis proposal. How do I cite a chapter from an e-text book from the database AccessMedicine?
Answer
This is the form for a chapter in an ebook from page 16 of the APA Style Guide to Electronic Resources, 6th edition.
Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (year). Title of chapter or entry. In A. A. Editor & B. B. Editor (Eds.), Title of book (pp. xxx–xxx). Retrieved from http://xxxxx
-
If there are no page numbers, the chapter or entry title is sufficient.
Based on this, I went to Current Medical Diagnosis 2019 and grabbed a random chapter to cite as an example. I have it looking like this -
Sutters, M. (2019). Systemic hypertension. In M. A. Papadakis, S. J. McPhee, & M.W. Rabow (Eds.), Current Medical Diagnosis 2019 (58th ed). Retrieved from https://accessmedicine.mhmedical.com/content.aspx?bookid=2449§ionid=194437234
Notes:
APA is looking for a URL in the retrieval statement, not the database name, even though someone trying to use the URL from AccessMedicine would end up at a firewall and not have access. However, if they did have access through their own institution, the URL contains an ID number for the document, so it could be useful.
My AskUs software doesn't allow me to do formatting of citations well (i.e. spacing & indents) so I have attached screenshots.
