Abbott, J. H., Robertson, M. C., Chapple, C., Pinto, D., Wright, A. A.,
Barra, S., . . . Campbell, A. J. (in press). Manual therapy, exercise
both, in addition to usual care, for osteoarthritis of the hip or knee: a

Answer

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed., deals with "in-press article posted in preprint archive" on p. 200.

Here is the example they give -
Briscoe, R. (in press). Egocentric spatial representation in action and perception.
Philosophy and Phenomenological Research. Retrieved from
     http://cogprints.org/5780//1/ECSRAP.F07.pdf

  • The exact URL is used because the article is informally published and not yet indexed on a journal website. Journal publishers that do not offer advance onoline publication may allow authors to post a version of their article online ahead of print in an outside repository, also called a preprint archive.
  • Update your references close to the publication date of your work and refer to the final version of the work, if possible.

So, it looks as if APA says "no" to using the doi in this case. They want the direct link to the article via the URL (perhaps because without the article being published yet, some traditional methods to locate articles via the doi are not yet available).

It looks like a pretty simple citation form, except for the direction to keep checking for the final, published citation information.

Good luck.
