How would I cite and reference my own work from prior CSS coursework?

Answer

Great question! I am assuming you are wishing to use the APA citation style. If not, please email back and we can help you with MLA or AMA.

On page 16 of the APA manual, it does go over self-plagiarism, which is what you are wishing to avoid by citing yourself. In short, if you are quoting or paraphrasing from earlier work you have submitted to a course or published in an outside source, you need to cite it.

What gets tricky is how to cite something that has not been published such as a paper you submitted to another course. This requires a bit of finagling as we can most closely treat it as an unpublished manuscript.

I think the only modification would be instead of "Unpublished master's thesis" you could put "Unpublished paper." If you submitted that paper to a course here at our college, that information can stay the same on our example; otherwise, you could change it to the institution's name and location where you did submit it.

That said, if you are using a substantial portion from a previous assignment, you might want to check with your instructor to make sure that that is okay. Technically, each course's work should be original in that that is the purpose for the course - to learn and do new things. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Please email back if you have more questions - good luck!
