How do you cite glossary terms?
Answer
I checked the index of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition and did not find an entry for either 'glossary' or 'definitions.'
I am making an assumption you are using a definition in your paper to further discuss an issue, something like ... "Situational depression is defined as ..."
Therefore, I think that ...
a). If you are using the term from the glossary, then you would treat the definition as a direct quote, using the terms from the book word-for-word and putting them in quotation marks.
b). You will need to create a reference for the book you are using as the source of the glossary/definitions. See the reference format section of our guide for citing a book.
c). Each definition that you quote will need the following items in the in-text or parenthetical reference - author, date, pg. number. Depending on how you write the sentence will affect how the in-text citation will look. See our in-text citation page for examples.
You might then end up with something like this in your paper...
Situational depression is defined as "depression from a situation" (Peterson, 2014, p. 356).
And I will mention this to make your life more fun ... :)
On p. 91 of Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition it states
- to introduce a technical term or key term [do not use quotes]. Instead, italicize the item.
The term zero-base budgeting appeared frequently in the speech.
Sooooo ...
Your sentence might also look like this ...
Situational depression is defined as "depression from a situation" (Peterson, 2014, p. 356).
I would defer to your professor as to which example to use.
Good luck with your paper!
