How do I site a picture found on a website in APA format?

Answer

I have been staring at the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition for the last half hour trying to figure out a concise way to answer your question.  I don’t have one.

You should probably spend some time studying pp. 151-167.

APA is designed for professional papers being submitted to professional journals, and that is how & why the rules are created. Student papers are not the same thing, but I don’t have the authority to wave the rules.

One thing that is stressed in APA is this: Do you really need to use a figure (i.e. photograph)? If it does not clearly enhance the understanding of your paper, then you should not do it.

A second thing that is stressed – do you have written permission to use the image?

Here is where the argument might be made that this is a student paper and since it is for one-time educational use I can go ahead and use it.

If so, then all the information – explanation of the photograph and the citation/copyright for the work is included in the caption under the image.  Again, you will need to consult pp. 151-167 for details of what should be included in the caption - there are excruciating details.

This is what the APA Style Guide to Electronic Resources shows for citing a photograph (p. 25).

Work of art (painting, drawing, sculpture, photograph, or other medium)

Artist, A. A. (copyright year). Title of work [Medium: Painting, drawing, sculpture,

     photograph, etc.]. Retrieved from http://xxxxx

Again, this would be included in the caption of the photography.

The one person who can wave the rules for APA is your professor. They can say "just put the citation under the photo and don't worry about it." Again, because I must answer your question based the the Publication Manual, I can't say that. It might be worth speaking with him/her.

So, now, an hour later, I have a short answer for you. Don't use the photo unless you absolutely have to.
