Answer

This is a messy one. APA always prefers you to cite the original source. In this case, I think it is the 1997 book Learning to lead: A workbook on becoming a leader by Warren Bennis & Joan Goldsmith.

We could ILL the book for you, but we are probably looking at a week turn-around time.

Also, from what I can tell, you are not actually trying to cite Warren & Bennis, but a chart created by your professor that sums up work by Warren & Bennis.

We could try using APA format for “unpublished and informally published works” from p. 211 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition.

APA describes it as …

“Unpublished work includes work that in progress, has been submitted for publication, or has been completed but not submitted for publication. This category also includes work that has not been formally published but is available on a personal, or institutional website, an electronic archive such as ERIC, or a preprint archive.

Author, A. A. (Year). Title of manuscript. Unpublished manuscript [or “Manuscript submitted for publication,” or Manuscript in preparation”].”

If your professor created the chart, that would make he/she the author, so your citation might look like this … we could also add a university affiliation (APA, p. 211).

White, T. (2014). Australian Shepherds vs Shih-tzus: Differences between working dogs and lap dogs.  Unpublished

class material summarizing the work of Smith & Johnson, 1997, The College of St. Scholastica, Duluth,

     Minnesota, United States.

If your professor does not agree with this, I would defer to her/his judgement.
