How to cite and reference a group author with mutliple articles?

I am using several articles from the same organizational author and I'm not sure how to cite each article in my paper. Is it enough to site the group author followed by the year of publication? I have a few articles published in the same year. What's the best way to do this?

Answer

You refer to two types of authors in your question – “group authors” and “organizational author.”

To me these are separate types of authorship.

A group author would give the names of the multiple individuals that authored the article ….

Example:  White, T., Johnson, H., & McGrew, K. (2014).

An organizational author would give credit for the article to the organization, with no individual listed as the author.

Example:  American Heart Association. (2014).

If you have a group of authors then depending on how many there are affects your first in-text citation, and then subsequent in-text citations.

Use the examples in the “In-Text and Parenthetical Citation Styles” as a guide.

If you have an organizational author (often refereed to as a “corporate” author) then the form of the author would stay the same in each reference.

The third part of your question deals with multiple articles with the same author.

If they are published in different years, then there is no problem differentiating them.

Example:

The Australian Shepherd is the best of all dog breeds (American Dog Club, 2010), and the breed standard has been changed to “the dog's eyes must give the appearance of insanity in order to adequately frighten the sheep” (American Dog Club, 2014, p. 6).

If both articles are published in the same year, then they are differentiated by a lowercase letter immediately following the date - (2014a).

Example:

The striking contrast between eye color and facial mask allows the Australian Shepherd to control sheep by eye contact alone (American Dog Club, 2014a). Unfortunately for the pet owner, this can cause problems with the Australian Shepherd  when it has determined it is dinner time (American Dog Club, 2014b).

For other examples, use the box In-Text and Parenthetical Citation Examples.

Note: Looking further in our online guide I see that group author is used for a corporate author. The principle is the same though, you either have named people or you have the name of an organization as an author.

For how to list the names in your reference list, use the boxes in the left-hand column on this APA Guide page.
