For APA style, what date do I use when citing a web page? The date in the article (e.g. last updated May 30, 2013) or the date I found the reference. When do I use the whole date versus just the year. For example: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/insurg.htm
Another site would be http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/281340-overview

Answer

In the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association you only use one date in a citation, and that is the creation date of the information (you do not add the day your viewed it, as with earlier versions of APA).

So, in the example you have, the only date would be – (2013, May 30).

Use as much of the date as supplied. If you are given day, month & year, then use them. If just month & year, then use that.

At a minimum, just the year.

If your source has no date listed, you must acknowledge that by using this – (n.d.).

So, your possibilities would be –

(2013, May 30).

(2013, May).

(2013).

(n.d.).
