I am writing a paper and trying to include in-text citations. I have serval traits that I am describing. Do I credit the source multiply times?

Answer

It is hard to answer these type of questions without seeing exactly what it is you are trying to cite.

I would say the answer is no, you don’t have to cite the source multiple times but it would depend on you are crafting your sentences & paragraphs.

If you paraphrase a study, it could look like this …

Research has shown Australian Shepherds possess certain neurotic traits in regards to food, including following their owners around with their bowl in their mouth; dropping their food bowl in front of their owner and barking; and just taking the lid of the food bin and helping themselves (White, 2014).

Or, if you are summing up multiple studies …

Various research has shown Australian Shepherds possess certain neurotic traits in regards to food, including following their owners around with their bowl in their mouth (White, 2014); dropping their food bowl in front of their owner and barking (Coates, 2012); and just taking the lid of the food bin and helping themselves (Blanco, 2013).

Or, maybe summing up & quoting from a single study …

Research by White (2014) has shown that Australian Shepherds possess certain traits in regards to food, including following their owners around with their bowl in their mouth; dropping their food bowl in front of their owner and barking; and just taking the lid of the food bin and helping themselves. He further states “they’re neurotic, but extremely lovable” (White, 2014, p. 29).

We have examples of creating in-text citations on our Library’s APA Guide - http://libguides.css.edu/c.php?g=41681&p=265025

Hope this clears up the “writer’s block.” Good luck with the semester.
