How do I add a short clarification in a cited quote?

I need to clarify the term used by the author - do I put the words in brackets in the original quote?

Answer

Bracket should work.

This, according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition, p. 94.

4.1  Brackets ...

to enclose material inserted in a quotation by some person other than the original writer.

"when [his own and others] behaviors were studied" (Hanisch, 1992, p. 24)
