Your LibAnswers guy thought this would be a fairly straight forward question when he claimed it, but 3+ hours later he is singing a different tune.
For the record, it is easy to find best seller lists for adult fiction & non-fiction.
And, for the record, it is easy to find "best" children's books for a particular year. However, "best" and "bestselling" are not the same thing.
LibAnswers guy can claim a 2/3rds victory. He can answer your question for 1962 & 1971, but is stumped for 1984.
TO FIND BEST SELLING CHILDREN'S BOOKS FOR 1962 & 1971
a). Access our database menu at: http://libguides.css.edu/az.php
b). Log on to the New York Times, Historical
c). Select advanced search
d). In the search box, type - children's best sellers
e). To the right of the search box is another box that says "citation and document text." Click on the arrow on the right hand side of the box and change it to "document title."
f). Click on search.
In the results you will see that best seller list show yearly from the mid-50s to the mid-70s and the stop. There is one lone one for 1994, and then they disappear again until 2000.
TO FIND BEST SELLING CHILDREN'S BOOKS FOR 1984
Currently LibAnswer guy is stumped. He has tried -
- numerous databases, including Academic Search Premier, Education Index, New York Times, Library Literature Index & Information Science, and our new Discovery tool.
- print indexes such as Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature
- print reference sources such as Bowker Annual
He will keep this question in mind and will update the answer if the information is found.
