AMA is a bit retro in that it uses superscript Roman numerals for its parenthetical references.

Depending on how you write your paper dictates where you insert the parenthetical reference. Your writing style should make it clear that you are discussing another work, or summarizing/presenting an idea that that is not yours.

If you are summarizing an article over multiple paragraphs, I would lean toward using a parenthetical reference at least once in each paragraph, or perhaps seeing if you can condense into one paragraph. It is best to err on the side of caution when using other's work.

But this doesn't need to be "scary" - here are some examples of how a parenthetical reference is used in AMA.

Note that if you use a direct quote the page number is added in parentheses after the superscript number. An example is provided in the link above.
